How to care for your hair extensions?

You’ve decided to install hair extensions and are turning heads. But is this for the right reason?

You’re turning heads because you look like the green-eyed Monster everywhere you go. Your hair looks longer, fuller and you sway as if you were the star of a shampoo commercial.

You may be turning heads for the wrong reasons: your extensions are showing, your color isn’t matching your natural hair or you have chosen a length so long that Rapunzel would be ashamed.

If you purchase quality extensions and install them correctly, nobody will know you are wearing them. If you know how to care for your extensions, they can last for many months (or even years!)

“Which hair extensions are the best?”

You may have asked this question to yourself, friends, Google, or Alexa in your quest for hair that is swoonworthy.

The best hair extensions, however, are made from real human hair and not synthetic hair. They can be dyed and styled like natural hair. This type of hair can last a long time if you take care of it. It can be expensive to purchase and install them.

Hair extensions are divided into three categories: temporary ones, like halos and clip-ins, semi-permanent options like tape-ins or sew-ins, and permanent options such as micro rings and keratin bonding (also called i-tips).

Take a look at the best way to care for your extensions.

Keep it Clean

Hair extensions should be regularly washed, whether they are removed every night or have been in place for a long time. The guidelines for washing extensions vary from brand to brand.

If you notice that your extensions have become duller and harder to style or if there is product buildup, it may be time to wash them.

Washing Temporary Extensions

Brush your clip-in or flip-in extensions out before you get them wet. This will reduce the chance of the hair tangling when cleaning. Always brush from the ends.

Fill up your sink or large container with warm water. Add a few squirts and swirl the extensions in the soapy solution. To ensure that the product is distributed evenly, do not scrub your hair. Instead, gently finger-comb it. If the hair is very dirty, rinse in cold water running and shampoo it again.

Apply the conditioner to the extension, let it sit for the time recommended, then rinse thoroughly. You can go one step further by applying a hair masque to your extensions.

After conditioning and deep conditioning, rinse the product thoroughly from the extensions. Squeeze the excess water out and pat it dry with a microfibre cloth. Let the hair air dry, without wringing it. Use a light moisturizing product to keep the hair smooth and shiny.

How to Wash Semi-Permanent Extensions and Permanent Extensions

You should wash your extensions in the bathroom. Massage gently the shampoo into your scalp and then apply it to your roots. Then squeeze it down your natural hair and extensions. Repeat the rinse as needed.

It is important to avoid loosing the bonds each time you wash your locks. This is why you should apply conditioner starting at the middle of the shaft and working towards the ends. It’s the same with a deep conditioner or hair mask. Rinse your hair slowly to remove all of the product.

Use a microfiber cloth to remove excess water. Allow your hair to reach 90% dryness before using heat or tools.

All About The Products

Your hair extension’s longevity is greatly affected by the products you use.

Choose shampoos and conditioners without sulfates and specifically formulated for hair extensions. Sulphates can do more than remove dirt. They can also cause your extensions become frizzy and dry. Check the ingredients on the label. Put the bottle down if you see SLS or Sodium Laureth Sulfate.

Avoid products with alcohol listed as the first component (this could also be alcohol denat, SD alcohol, propanol or isopropyl). Alcohol-based products can cause extensions to matt more easily.

Use them sparingly. They can cause buildup.

Use a lightweight hair serum that is made specifically for extensions to help keep your hair supple and manageable.

Style Responsibly

Brush your extensions several times per day to prevent them from tangling. You should use a wide tooth comb or hair extension brush with bristles that won’t pull, snag or damage your extensions or natural hair. Brush from the bottom up, slowly working your way to the roots.

As with your natural hair you should limit your use of heat for hair extensions. Heat should only be applied after the hair has dried. Heat protectant is essential when using heat styling tools. Keep the temperature of your hair dryer, curler or flat iron below 400degF/200degC.

You can reduce heat exposure by braiding the extensions while they are still wet, and then letting them dry naturally. Or you can create pin curls.

Shop Wisely

Store your extensions carefully if you don’t plan to use them for a while. This will help to prolong their life.

Detangle and brush the hair before storing. Store your extensions dry or damp. They will mold if they are stored wet.

Store the hair extensions in a box away from direct sun and in a cool place. You can also use a non-woven storage bag with a hanger for hair extensions.

Final Words

Hair extensions can be a great option to change up your style. If you have a good hair routine and follow the above recommendations, you can enjoy your hair for many months.
